Happy Tariff Day
As promised, US President Donald Trump has imposed his Draconian, irrational tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China, thereby imposing the largest tax increase on Americans in decades.
Despite assurances of the administration, tariffs are taxes that are not paid for by the country on which it is imposed, but by American consumers in the form of increased costs on a wide range of products from clothing to fuel to even food. Additionally, there is no guarantee that any other country will choose to expose their goods to these tariffs. Rising and growing economies like those in India and Brazil would likely welcome new trade partners with open arms.
The Libertarian Party of Wisconsin (LPWI) continues to believe that free trade, devoid of excessive, punitive tariffs, is fair trade. Limiting demand by artificially inflating prices is a path towards even more inflation that harms all Americans.
